I wanted this to be different

I wanted to tell you all the funny stories about my trip to Maui.

I wanted to tell you about our delayed flights and the cast of characters I met.

But Maui burned.

My son is still on Maui. He is safe and I am grateful.

But the shopkeeper from Rabbit Hash, KY that I met in Lahaina? I don’t know if she is okay.

The Banyan tree that is sacred to the native people? It is certainly not okay.

People lost their homes and their livelihoods and their lives. I mourn for them.

Hawaii is beautiful. Maui is magical.

Please consider donating. This is goddamn devastating.

Joey comes home at the end of the month. I wish it was the end of the month.

This is Joey under the Banyan tree. We were just there.

  1. I’ve followed you for years and while I have only been to Lahaina once, my in-laws go every year and I was hoping to join them next year. They were (idk about plans) due to go in October. I’ve been searching articles since she texted me. I learned that the church the MIL and I went to because it had a service in Hawaiian is definitely gone (I saw a picture). For some reason this is shaking me, more than any other fire I’ve read about. Maybe because I’ve been there, and I have wandered that town. There are no words. Glad you all are safe.

  2. Wife was born on Oahu, mom was raised on Maui, rest of family is on Kauai. Heartbreaking to see the devastation to Lahaina Town. It was such a lovely place. Hope Joey stays safe.

  3. Damn it Michelle, I was going to make a joke about you being responsible for issue 1 losing 2 to 1 in your county, but now it doesn’t seem appropriate. Glad you’re OK, and Joey is OK. Fires are no damn joke, we live in the gap between two huge burn scars, and there’s a fucking heat wave…

    • Oh, I am THRILLED with the election. Did you see 98% of the Ohio State voters voted no? And my county did kick some major ass.

I hope you stay safe…you are right, it is no damn joke. I talked with Joey last night. He is safe and there is no expectation that the fire will spread to where he is..but who knows?

  4. I haven’t been there yet but that doesn’t matter. All that matters is how terrible what’s happening there is and how much I hope the people there can make it through this. I’m glad you and Joey are okay.

    • Thank you. I wish he was coming home sooner, but he is safe. Yesterday was bad because it took a long time to get in touch with him. We were terrified. He’s good, though. I just can’t get my head around this. We were just there. It’s devastating.

  5. Been hearing about it on the news, fires are so horrible and cause so much damage and grief and yes even death not good at all.

  6. This is so heartbreaking. I truly am concerned about the state of our planet – I worry for what’s in store for our grandchildren. I’m glad you are safe.
